Find Statistical Peers

ਸਰਲ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥ

Statistical Peers ranks exact same-exchange listings by observed daily-return co-movement over overlapping completed sessions. A high correlation says two price series moved together in that window; it does not claim the businesses, valuation or future returns are comparable.

Why it is useful #

The tool can reveal historical co-movement beyond a sector label while publishing candidate-basis, overlap and same-sector counts. It is useful for generating questions about shared exposures, but causal explanations require separate company and market evidence.

Where it appears and the workflow #

Open Statistical Peers, select the exchange and exact symbol, choose a lookback from 60 to 750 sessions and a result limit, then run. Verify the window, candidates compared, candidates with measurable correlation and minimum overlap before inspecting each peer's chart, sector and industry.

Calculation or source #

The DB-only service converts persisted closes to daily returns, aligns pairs by common dates and ranks measurable candidates by the implemented correlation method. The bounded pool contains the exchange's largest active listings by market capitalisation plus every active listing carrying the target's exact sector label.

Prerequisites, inputs, period and unit #

Prerequisites are at least two valid stored closes for the target and sufficient common sessions with a candidate; the response publishes the minimum overlap. Correlation is dimensionless from -1 to +1. Market capitalisation only bounds the candidate pool and retains the exchange's native scale; it is not part of the correlation value.

Worked example #

Illustrative only: a target and peer share 120 sessions and have correlation 0.82, while another shares 65 sessions at 0.84. The second number is slightly higher but rests on much less overlap; neither proves a business relationship or that tomorrow's returns will move together.

What high and low mean #

Correlation nearer +1 means returns tended to move together, nearer -1 means they tended to move oppositely, and nearer 0 means little linear co-movement in the measured window. Higher absolute correlation is not automatically better or lower risk.

Positive, negative and zero #

Positive, negative and zero correlation retain their statistical meaning. A missing correlation means overlap or valid history was insufficient; it is not zero. Same-sector is a separate identity flag and contributes no positive score.

Unavailable values #

The result is unavailable when the exact listing is absent, has too little history, no candidate meets minimum overlap, or the bounded pool has no measurable rows. The service does not call a provider on request and must not invent peers or reuse another exchange's history.

Limitations and common mistakes #

Correlation is window-sensitive, can change during stress, and does not establish causation, substitutability or cointegration. The candidate pool is intentionally bounded. Common mistakes are comparing different windows, ignoring overlap, treating sector as proof, and reading co-movement as diversification advice.

Market-specific differences #

Candidates always come from the target's exact exchange. Session calendars and history depth therefore follow that venue, and the same ticker on another exchange is a different listing. Currency levels are not correlated directly; the method uses dated returns.

Related terms #

Related concepts include correlation, covariance, daily return, overlap, sector, industry, market capitalisation, exact listing and unavailable. Continue with Market Model for benchmark sensitivity and Company Intelligence for business evidence.

Suggested next steps #

Run two lookback windows for one listing and record how ranks, correlations and overlap change. Open the top same-sector and top different-sector peer, list plausible shared exposures, and state what evidence would be required before calling either a business peer.

Educational use only #

This guide explains descriptive research evidence. It is not investment advice, a price prediction, a recommendation, a claim of predictive accuracy, or an instruction to buy, sell, rebalance or place an order.
