Volume, participation and price confirmation

Significado en lenguaje sencillo
Volume reports the quantity traded during a stated interval under the provider's venue coverage. It can describe participation alongside price, but it does not identify who traded, why they traded or whether the activity was informed.
Learning objectives #
You should be able to read raw and relative volume, distinguish volume from turnover and open interest, describe common price-volume combinations, and identify when volume comparisons are invalid.
Core concept #
Relative volume divides the latest reported volume by the average of preceding volumes under a disclosed lookback; XMarketRadar uses the preceding 20 sessions by default. VWAP weights price by volume within its stated scope. MFI and Chaikin studies transform both OHLC and volume and therefore fail when trustworthy volume is absent.
Method and conventions #
Compare completed bars at the same interval and similar session position. For breakouts, define the price rule separately from the volume rule. Seasonal patterns, index rebalances and expiry events can lift volume without confirming a directional narrative.
Use it in XMarketRadar #
In charting, add volume or a volume-dependent study and inspect source status. In Screener, a condition such as relative volume above 1.5 requires both a valid price observation and complete preceding volume window; unavailable volume must exclude the row.
Worked example #
If the preceding 20-session average is 1,000,000 shares and the latest completed session reports 1,800,000, relative volume is 1.8. A close above resistance plus 1.8 relative volume records two conditions; it does not prove that the breakout will persist.
How to interpret it #
Rising price with rising volume, falling price with rising volume and quiet consolidations are descriptive combinations. Interpretation depends on trend, event context and comparable history. High activity has magnitude but no inherently positive or negative sign.
Limitations and common mistakes #
Do not compare a full session with a partial session, equate futures open interest with cash volume, or use consolidated and single-venue feeds interchangeably. A split can mechanically change share volume, and block or auction trades can dominate one bar.
Market-specific differences #
Off-book reporting, auction inclusion and consolidated-feed coverage differ by venue. Forex tick volume and crypto exchange volume are not automatically comparable with exchange-reported equity share volume.
Key takeaway #
Key takeaway: volume is participation evidence whose source and session basis matter as much as its magnitude.
Practice exercise #
Practice: calculate relative volume for one completed session, identify whether the baseline excludes the current bar, and list two non-directional events that could explain an unusually high value.
Educational use only #
This chapter is descriptive education. It is not investment advice, a price prediction, a recommendation, a claim of predictive accuracy, or an instruction to buy, sell, rebalance or place an order.
